Crossword puzzles are the ultimate test of vocabulary and general knowledge. However, even seasoned solvers occasionally encounter tricky clues. Here are 7 beginner hacks to level up your crossword solving speed:
1. Solve the Easiest Clues First
Don't force yourself to start at 1-Across. Scan the grid for fill-in-the-blank clues or obvious definitions to establish letter anchors across the board.
2. Fill in Plural "S" Endings
If a clue is plural (e.g. "Viking ships"), the answer almost certainly ends with the letter S. Place the "S" at the end of the slot to assist intersecting words!
3. Check Tense Consistency
Crossword clues always match the grammatical tense of the answer. If a clue is past tense ("Sailed the ocean"), the answer will likely end in -ED.
4. Use Intersecting Anchors
If a 6-letter word seems impossible, focus on solving a short 3-letter word that crosses it. A single correct letter often unlocks the entire word!
